I got fed up with Google Drive’s syncing and offline issues, so I switched to Dropbox. Here’s why it made sense for me, and why I can't recommend the Google Drive desktop app.
I'll be switching to Dropbox soon. One advantage is using on Linux. Another is the excellent file requests feature. However Google drive for Desktop is not as confusing as the author makes it sound. You are asked at setup whether you want streaming or mirroring. You can easily select your Documents, Picture or Download folders and they will be local and on the cloud. OneDrive is much worse with the confusion level of what is local and what is cloud based. However I found Google Drive has some issues and I'm tired of big tech.
What I stated in this blog post is absolutely true based on my experiences, what I read in my research, and what I have heard from others, though this is always subjective based on how tech-savvy someone is. The language during setup favors Google and doesn't properly explain the implications of "streaming" or "online only". As I said, I found sync to be unreliable with Google Drive, whether to the cloud or to another computer with Google Drive installed. Dropbox is still big tech, but in my experience, it usually works very well.
