Quick Tip: A Smarter Way to Handle Unwanted Emails: If You’re Not Reading It, Unsubscribe From It, Or Ignore It.
Unsubscribing from junk emails isn't always safe. Here's how to clean up your inbox without putting yourself at risk.
A significant portion of inbox clutter typically originates from marketing emails, most of which you never requested or no longer find relevant. It doesn’t take much to get added to a list: making one purchase, signing up for a coupon code, or creating an account, and the messages start rolling in.
The good news? You can clean it up. And it doesn’t take a complicated system.
Unsubscribe More Often Than You Think You Need To
Most marketing emails come from places you’ve only shopped at once or twice. You don’t need to keep hearing from them. Make it a habit to scroll to the bottom and unsubscribe from messages you trust, but are no longer interested in. You can always sign up again later.

If you’re using Gmail, use their safer unsubscribe feature, which Gmail uses to signal that particular emails are set to unsubscribe safely.
Be Cautious With Suspicious Emails
Not every “unsubscribe” link or button is safe. Some scam emails are designed to appear like legitimate newsletters, but clicking those links reveals to the sender that your email address is active. That can trigger even more spam. If the email appears suspicious or out of place, don’t click on anything; instead, delete it or report it as spam.
Want to Learn How to Unsubscribe Safely?
Before you start unsubscribing from everything, it's worth knowing which links are safe and which ones might put you at risk. In a separate blog post [paid subs], I break down how to spot the difference, why one in every 644 unsubscribe links can lead to a dangerous website, and how to use tools like Gmail’s built-in unsubscribe feature.

Let Your Inactivity Send the Message
Every time you ignore or delete a marketing email without opening it, you’re signaling that you’re not interested. Marketers track engagement, and over time, some senders will automatically drop you from their lists if you never interact. You don’t always need to take action. Silence can be effective too.
Unsubscribe Regularly
Your email address has value. Marketers want your attention, but you don’t have to give it freely. By unsubscribing regularly and being selective about what you allow into your inbox, you reclaim control of your time and attention.
Less Noise, More Focus
An inbox full of noise chips away at your focus. It’s not about reaching inbox zero, it’s about feeling less overwhelmed every time you open your email. Start small. Unsubscribe from a few unnecessary newsletters or marketing emails today. Over time, you’ll notice the difference, and your inbox will finally start being more manageable and stop stealing your attention.
